What happened next surprised her.

"I guess you could kind of feel it coming, because it was escalating," Leslie said Wednesday. "But I really thought we were going to get through the game. Just win and get out of there."

The ensuing melee, which started when Detroit's Plenette Pierson and Los Angeles' Candace Parker tangled after the free throw, came with 4.6 seconds left in the 84-81 victory and could leave both teams short-handed as WNBA president Donna Orender is expected to suspend players.

The WNBA swiftly suspended the Detroit and Los Angeles players and Shock assistant coach Rick Mahorn for their role in a skirmish at The Palace of Auburn Hills. (less)
